Mighty crack

The first heat runners in the opening round of the Bresbet Gymcrack go to traps at just before 2pm today.

Worth £17,500 to the winner, including heats worth £400 and semis worth £450, at one of the most popular tracks in the business, the sponsors might reasonably have expected a mammoth entry.

In fact, they only just limped over the line with 30 entries for a 36 runner event. Quite how much Wicky Ned’s presence is to blame for sending the opposition running scared is impossible to fathom. His form to date is exceptional, though 6/4 to win out, is extremely short about a dog with only two career outings on his card.

Betting: 6/4 Wicky Ned, 8/1 Sandwood Woody, 11/1 Greenwell Coe, 12/1 Droopys Supply, 14/1 Coppice Leger, Ellanne Run, 16/1 bar.

Capaldi Quickest

King Capaldi clocked the fastest time in Perry Barr’s final pre-ARC-Laurels workout opportunity on Saturday night.

The five-time Category One finalist recorded 28.02 on going rated at (-10) following an exceptional 3.39 split. Links Maverick was next quickest at the session with a 28.13 run. The quickest run over course and distance last year was Capaldi’s kennelmate Queen Joni in 27.90.
