The 2015 William Hill Derby winner Rio Quattro will depart these shores next week with another trophy in the locker – the Greyhound Writers’ Association’s Greyhound of the Month award for June.

The journalists were as one in their admiration of the dog’s performance in the final of the Classic and his owner-trainer Danny Riordan will receive the trophy, which is sponsored by the GBGB, next month.

Riordan retired the dog in the wake of his classic success, deciding to send him back to his breeder Sean Dunphy at Portlaw in Ireland and he will say a teary farewell to his champion within the next few days.

He says: “It will be a sad day for all of us at the kennel as he has done a wonderful job for us and I just couldn’t ask any more of him. I am so pleased that he has been given this award as it will be something nice to keep amongst our memories of his time here.”
