The William Hill Springbok for 36 runners is unlikely to get a full complement of runners this year writes Jason Craddock.

The Wimbledon event gets underway in three weeks’ time but as things stand there are only 33 runners qualified and a few of those may not make the line-up.

Owen Winkley, deputy racing manager at the track said: “The class at the top end is as good as ever and I think Jaytee Seville, who is getting better with each spin over the sticks will take some beating.

“However we’ve only 33 runners qualified at present and some of those aren’t the greatest jumpers in the world and may not even be entered.

“We’ll probably go with a slimmed down event.”

The Springbok Final will share the billing with the Racing Post Juvenile Championship on the Sky Sports broadcast from the track on Tuesday March 3.

Lenson Sanchez, who contests Saturday’s final of the Joe Dunne Memorial over 525 yards at Shelbourne Park, will be the one to beat in the Juvenile.

Pat Buckley’s runner landed the Puppy Derby at Wimbledon back in November.

The event is now open to any runner whelped in July 2012 or after and preference may be given to the winners of major puppy events in 2014.

Bubbly Zeus, who won Shelbourne’s National Puppy Stake in December, is another being targeted for the competition.

However Paul Young’s runner clocked a disappointing 16.50sec in his second 273 metre sprint at the track.

Satellite Mesebo is currently the dog to beat in the top grade at Wimbledon.

Tony Collett’s consistent runner has won her last two A1 races in 28.88sec and 28.85sec.
