We receive numerous enquiries relating to greyhound memorabilia but never anything quite like this.

This magnificent grandfather clock might not strike you (urgh!) as a rare piece of greyhound history, until you read the brass plate near the base.

It is the trophy awarded to Bonzo for winning the Northern Hurdles Championship in 1927.

Even our archive is stretched at that point but we can tell you that the event was staged at Belle Vue, which had only been open for 14 months at that stage.

Trainer Buck was attached to Belle Vue but Bonzo’s unique claim to fame is that he also landed the first ever Grand National which was staged at London White City in the same year.

Their is some confusion over Bonzo’s ownership – which is inscribed as being Mr S Tetley – though the credited owner of the dog is Mr Shaw. The clock was inherited by Sam Tetley’s granddaughter and it is her husband Mike Schofield who was interested in its background.

Mr and Mrs Schofield are currently downsizing and a looking to sell the clock either privately or at auction. If you have an interest, you can contact them directly on [email protected]
