Yarmouth attracted their biggest crowd of the year on Saturday June 27, though promoter Simon Franklin admits to having mixed feelings about the meeting.

He said: “We decided to try to boost numbers by running Group-On during the month. I think the first two Saturdays we had between 200-300 on the deal and probably 400 on the third Saturday. But for the last Saturday of the month, there were 680 here on the Group-On deal alone. We printed 1,450 racecards and ran out.

“I am not complaining but it’s a bit ‘all of nothing’. We had all the tote machines operating and there were still queues, and the trainers were moaning about the queues in the snack bars and in the bars. While it is nice to get new people into the stadium to experience greyhound racing, the last thing that so many say is ‘had a great night, let us know when you have another Group-On deal.

“Run too many, and it becomes your standard deal and you really can’t make it pay. We have become so ‘deal led’ and I don’t know how we break the cycle.”
