There can’t be many tracks boasting bigger racing strengths than they had a year ago, but Henlow certainly can writes Floyd Amphlett.

Racing manager Paul Mellor said: “I am a bit cautious about sounding too cocky, but things are certainly a lot better than this time last year when we switched back to racing three times a week.

“In the last few months we’ve had a whole of trainers join us or come back. Eric Cantillon has a huge racing strength, Paul Clark has 30 runners, then there’s Pam Dolby, Paul Philpott, Glyn Davies, Kevin Cobbold. . .

“Apart from the actual runners we have 60 dogs trialling every week and a percentage of those are qualifying at every session. We are still a few short for the Saturday nights, but then we have the Derby starting soon.”

Eric Cantillon has virtually single-handedly also boosted the number of pups on the card.

Mellor said: “Blackrose Paul, who I mentioned a month ago, has gone from strength to strength winning his last two and clocking 27.74 (460) this week. His brother brother Blackrose Zebo is also flying and they are only February pups.

“Blackrose Seve is a month younger and has won his last three and Eric is trialling more in every week.”
