Jimmy Wright’s Droopys Five will be taking on five talented local youngsters in the final of the Sheffield Stadium Puppy at Owlerton next Tuesday writes John Forbes.

The son of Loughteen Blanco bounced back to winning form in the opening heat of the competition by leading from the first turn and defeating Candlelight Fire and Geelo Lola comfortably in 28.83 for the 500 metres, which was 18 spots faster than heat two winner Mustang Mack, who made a promising debut for Elaine Parker by leading home Geelo Brenny and Kowloon Ronnie.

The meeting also featured three heats of the Sheffield Stadium Standard. Parker’s Lightfoot Scholar was a length and a half too good for Satin Mark in 28.66 in the opener; Coolboy Blitz finished strongly to get the better of Rhoden Slip by a length and threequarters in 28.88 the next; and Swift America duplicated that time in the last qualifier where he finished two lengths clear of Glenpadden Wood.
