Scolari Sound completed an unbeaten run through the Stadium Bookmakers National Sprint with victory in Monday’s final over 305 metres writes Jason Craddock.

David Pruhs’ rising star was installed the 4-6 favourite for the race after two impressive performances in the preliminaries and his backers never had an anxious moment when the flashed out in front.

Pulling further clear with each stride, Scolari Sound went on to beat kennelmate Laughing Gravy by three and a half lengths in 17.56sec.

Pruhs said afterwards: “I got him unraced and he’s done everything right from day one.

“I was a bit worried after he fell on the run to the drop last week and he was sore for a few days but he’s recovered well and did it in style.

“The dog has won six of his seven sprints at Nottingham now and also landed the S&D Sprint Final at Peterborough so we’re hoping he gets nominated for the sprinter of the year as he’s definitely the one to beat at the moment.

“We’ll probably give him six to eight weeks off now as he’s still a pup and we want to look after him.

“I think the best is yet to come with him and it will be interesting to see how far he stays now he’s a bit older.”

Scolari Sound was bred by Ronan McCusker from Co.Tyrone out of his former Drumbo Park 550 A1 winner Turn It Up (Westmead Joe-Hold On Angel) and was originally registered as ‘Ferocious Start’. From an early paced litter, his comrades include Sheffied D2 winners Rosie’s Lari and Return The Call and D3 runner Only Link.

Sound is his sire’s seventh National Sprint finalist and second winner (Helenas Sailor ’13). The ‘nearly misses’ include two finals for the Pruhs’ kennel’s unfortunate Rotar Wing. Sound’s dam is a litter sister to Dynamo Joe, who won 25 opens for the Weatherall kennel and set a sprint track record at Coventry. A cross between grand dam Hold On Angel (Hondo Black-Joplin) and Droopys Scolari produced Oxford sprint record breaker Up For Sam.

Star of the undercard was Charlie Lister’s Tyrur Supermac. The son of Tyrur Sugar Ray wasn’t brilliantly away but flew to the turn and hit the front and he went on to hold Oneco Maverik by two and a half lengths in 29.72sec.

Lister also unleashed a useful new runner in the shape of Cloran Paddy, who landed the Stadium Bookmakers Puppy Standard over 500 metres.

The son of Westmead Hawk was soon clear and went on to beat Newinn Champ by five and a half lengths in 29.82sec.

There was a comfortable victory for Elwick Glory in the Stadium Bookmakers Stayers Stakes over 680 metres when she made all to beat local runner Slaneyside Dubh by just over four lengths in 41.96sec.
