Ballymac Brogan broke a hock in a solo trial before racing at Nottingham on Monday night writes Floyd Amphlett.

Joint owner Dave Lawrence said: “In couldn’t believe it when I got the call from Seamus. You almost prepare yourself for injuries in races, but this was a solo trial! He has been strapped up and is due at the vet’s at 11.30 this morning. Seamus thinks it is a bad one and it seems very unlikely that he would ever race again, this was probably going to be his last year on the track anyway.

“Although he seemed a little bit in shock last night, he seems okay this morning. If all goes to plan we will look for a home for him. I don’t have facilities to have him at home, a first floor one-bedroom flat, but he will make a great pet for somebody. We have had a bad run this year and one of our young dogs whose career was ended at Wimbledon was actually rehomed yesterday.”

Brogan won the ’15 Racing Post Juvenile and finished runner-up in the Olympic but Dave considers the dog’s win in the Calne Racing Arc as the highlight of his time as an owner.

He said: “I was only watching a replay the other day and thinking to myself, ‘how on earth did he win it so far?’

Brogan’s next appointment had been in next Tuesday’s Betfred Select. Another four members of the field trialled on the night with Droopys Buick going one spot quicker than Eden Kid with a 29.70 solo. Hot Pipe did 30.26, Domino Storm clocked 29.97.

The last remaining runner Lenson Sanchez is due to trial on Friday with the trap draw due to be made late morning.

Nottingham GM Dave Baldwin has confirmed that connections of first reserve Making Paper will take his place in the event.
