Within the past few weeks, Greyhound Racing Ireland were presented with a proposal for a new Shelbourne Park. Not heard about it? Not many people have – writes Floyd Amphlett.

The idea – presented by one of Ireland’s leading commercial developers – was to relocate Shelbourne Park to a site just off the M50 motorway outside Dublin.

There were three main benefits to the plan.

  1. 1) A new state-of-the-art facility (it is much more than a greyhound track) which, quite frankly looks the best in the world
  2. 2) A stadium that would avoid Dublin’s horrendous traffic congestion issues
  3. 3) Not only would the new project be affordable, at a cost of around €28m – set against the estimated current value of the Ringsend track at €35m – it would release badly needed cash for the Irish industry.
  4. Sadly – I am informed – it received virtually zero consideration and virtually no support from the Greyhound Board.
