While most of the Saturday night attention will obviously focus on the Greyhound Derby, 60 non-Derby greyhounds, from seven tracks, will compete over four different distances at Crayford.

Proof surely of the absolute necessity for diversity in racing?

We are at the semi final stage of the Ladbrokes Kent St.Leger and the sponsors have Bo Shine Bullet as their 2-1 favourite to eventually take the £7,500 first prize.

Like Manchester City or Novak Djokovic, Bullet makes more headlines in defeat than victory. A winner of seven of her nine races, she came off second best in the George Ing St.Leger Final at Yarmouth when unable to catch Blue Tick George.

Even more memorable was her defeat at 4-9f in the Golden Jacket final back in February. Having clocked a FOY 45.00 in the semi finals, the Mark Wallis trained bitch missed her break in the final and was knocked over.

It is eight months and 13 races since Bullet last ran from black – a trap she has never won from. She is also in the most competitive semi final which features four of the six heat winners.

Crayford racing manager Danny Rayment said: “She looks the stand-out runner in the competition. She was very unlucky in the Golden Jacket. She didn’t come away and there was a wall of dogs in front of her at the first bend with no way through it. I think she can clear Ragtime Arthur but will have to tread carefully to get a clear run.”

The second semi looks the weakest of the three though Danny believes at least one of the sextet could make significant progress on heat running.

He said: “Deadly Do Lago ran an absolute stormer just to qualify, he overcame all sorts of trouble.

The other two heat winners both go in the third semi with the second and third in the ante post market, Alaskan Dawn (7-2) and Mays Sabbath (5-1) both fancied to qualify by the grader.

The Kent St.Leger is supported by the Guys & Dolls, the Kent Vase and the Kent Champion Hurdle.

Danny Rayment said: “All four events were oversubscribed. Traditionally the Dolls events are always a bit weaker than the dog’s competition, but we have two exceptional bitches in Punk Rock Doll and Antonella who can very much compete with the males.

“In the Guys race, Signature Callum likes the track and is coming back to his best so looks the one to beat.”
