Going allowances are subjective calculations, but without them, it is often difficult to compare outstanding performances in different conditions. There can be few better examples than Droopys Addition’s 28.04 win in the first round of the Ladbrokes Puppy Derby at Monmore – writes Floyd Amphlett.

The Monmore stewards had a string of A1 events to compare with when estimating the going allowance of -30. So it is interesting to compare Addition’s 27.77 (calc) with Ballymac Eske’s eight year old track record of 27.48, on going rated as +30.

Addition’s run also takes the limelight from some other exceptional performances, notably Queen Jessiej, who was contesting just her fourth race when she too produced a calculated sub 28.00 performance.
