In a race as open as any in recent years, I’m siding with Susie Sapphire to once again ping out and make all in tonight’s Boylesports Irish Derby Final.
The last time a bitch won this prestigious final was some 22 years ago back in 1999 when Spring Time crossed the line in front for Gerald Watson.

A young bitch with the world at her feet already a winner of both the Puppy Oaks and the Oaks here at Shelbourne this year she has been simply sensational for trainer Owen McKenna and her breeder / owner Peter Comerford when so far going unbeaten through the Derby.  A bitch who takes the paint of the rail and navigates the bends with such force and fluidity she has her box and nobody would deny her or the much-loved Comerford family victory here.

The Comerford’s are steeped in greyhound racing history and have put as much into the sport as any family in the land.  A memorable victory would be well earned and would also gain Owen a victory that might have seemed so far away after the devastating injury suffered by his Pestana in last year’s final.
The very best of luck to all six sets of connections whose hard work and dedication over the past couple of years has now put them within striking distance of realising their dreams.  Those in control of our sport need to watch tonight and realise that without such dreams our sport has no future.
