Mark Wallis had a 1-2 in the final of the Coral Brighton Belle over 515 metres at Hove on Thursday when Airforce Duchess edged out kennelmate Aero Babooshka.

Millward Katy, unbeaten going into the final went to traps a 6-4 favourite but failed to establish a clear early lead.

Aero Babooshka led off the opening turn but was followed through by Airforce Duchess, who gradually wore down the leader and got up right on the line to score by a short head in 29.91sec.

One of the winning syndicate said afterwards: “Thanks to Keith Doherty in Ireland, who put us onto this bitch and she has turned out to be brilliant.

“We weren’t sure if she had won but thankfully she did and she may be stepped up in distance very soon.”

Kennelhand Sid Hewitt said: “This has capped off what has already been a tremendous week after the kennel also landed the Champion Stakes with Patchys Kerry.”

Poole raider Ninja Turbo, a 12-1 shot, caused a shock in the Alan Etherington Memorial Trophy over 515 metres.

Jo Burridge’s runner came from last to first to pass the hot favourite Dorotas Blue on the last turn and score by three quarters of a length in 30.20sec.
