Newcastle runners demonstrated their strength in depth by taking half of the semi final places in the ARC Classic at Sunderland with local Racing Manager Joe Frelford expecting them to ratchet up the pressure next Thursday.

He said: “There were some very good performances but nothing impressed me more than Droopys Dazzler. It wasn’t just that he clocked the fastest time, it was the way that he came away and moved across to rails.

“I reckon he left a couple of lengths on the track but he has a plum draw next week, albeit it is a cracking third semi final.

“Slangevar Tommy also ran really well and shoved a lot of bravery to go past at the third bend, though he does look as though he might lack a yard of early.

“The other one who caught my eye was Moanteen Mikey. He struggled to get home but he isn’t long back from a lay-off and I would expect he will be stronger next time out.”
