Sheffield are to honour the exploits of local grader Shotgun Slade who is due to contest his 250th race on Friday.

Racing office spokesman Matt Stagg said: “We are planning a presentation and naming a race in his honour ‘The Shotgun Slade 250 Not Out Stake’. He has been a marvelous old dog and barely seems to have had a day’s lameness.”

The October 13 son of Kinloch Brae and Bread Head made his Sheffield debut in July 2015 and peaked seven months later when winning consecutive A2 and A1 events. Now down in bottom grade, he nevertheless caused a surprise when bolting up by nearly ten lengths in race 246.

Trainer Jamie Smith said: “The old boy is still loving his racing and can still produce a performance when he gets a clear run.”
