An escalation in the power struggle between BAGS and SIS appears imminent with Ladbrokes allegedly ready to announce that they will not renew their deal with BAGS deal beyond this year writes Floyd Amphlett.

For those unfamiliar with the background, BAGS is the non-profit making organisation who operate the afternoon greyhound service on behalf of the betting shops. SIS is the broadcaster that delivers the coverage to the shops on BAGS’ behalf.

Relations between the two bodies have been deteriorating over a long period with views leaking from each organisation suggesting that they could each operate without the other.

With Coral – who may soon merge with Ladbrokes – already committed to SIS, the battle for betting office greyhound product is on.

The majority of current BAGS contracts do not expire until 2019 which would suggest SIS have many racing slots to fill; though we understand that the two Ladbrokes tracks are currently preparing to increase their racing schedules.

In addition, other tracks, including top BAGS venues, have confirmed that they have been approached by SIS for races outside their contracted BAGS fixtures.

In the longer term, it is debatable whether both organisations can survive, but in the interim, the additional demand for a finite product should see owners and trainers benefit in terms of increased prize money and retainers.
