Damson Jam (Droopys Scolari-Dalcash Tara, Apr 13) extended his winning sequence to five with a NOTTINGHAMvictory in the £500 Carlsberg Sprint Trophy.

Jim Hayton’s 7-4jf trapped well but looked to have blown it when Charlie Lister’s Sidarian Bullet (T6) seized the initiative, but showing great resilience, the white jacket rallied off the last bend and got home for a very decent head victory in 17.80. The night’s other two sprint opens went to Valentia Slate (17.87) Ballymac Kite (17.91) and Lello (18.01).

The performance of the night was arguably Fred The Shread’s victory in the heats of a 500 metre sweepstake. Paul Sallis’ striped jacketed runner trapped slowly, showed great trackcraft to hold his position at the bend and then pulled away impressively for a three and a half length win over Khag Yolo in the second fastest time of the year 29.73 (Alma Chic’s best is 29.68). The other qualifiers went to last week’s sweepstake winner Veteran in 29.93 and Dave Pruhs’ Swords Wizard in 29.95.

The 680m open provided the most exciting finish of the night with supporters of 4-7f Oneco Melissa (T4) made to sweat all the way to the line.

The race was dominated by 10-1 chance Boherna Petal (T3) and after showing great resilience to make her challenge of the run to the line, Charlie Lister’s coloured bitch was almost mugged for the victory by the impressive Pointless Pilot (T6) who only failed by a short head. The winner clocked 42.06.
