Ladbrokes’ have unveiled details of their £200,000 prize money increase for 2016, shared between Crayford and Monmore. It will mean that no greyhound races for less than £40 prize money (inclusive of the £5 GBGB runner payment).

Head of Stadia for Ladbrokes, Richard Brankley, commented “No greyhound at a Ladbrokes track will run for less than £40, no winner will be less than £100 and top grade winners can expect £160 – £200. Prize money is key to attracting owners and providing trainers with the sound financial base they need to invest in their businesses and to operate at the highest standards of welfare and integrity.”

Crayford’s newest professional Mark Fenwick said: “It is gratefully received and badly needed. It is particularly welcome in the lower grades.

“I charge £7 per day and if a dog runs four times a month, including a win, it enables an owner to be in front. We have three full time staff including myself, and there isn’t a lot left at the end of month.

“I own most of the dogs myself, but that isn’t out of choice. Hopefully this increase will make ownership seem a little more attractive.

“I know how hard it is to make a living, and I work at one of the best paying tracks. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be at some of the others.”
