Carl Perry, who has enjoyed a lot of success at Sheffield’s open meeting since taking out his licence last year and partnering up with owner Nic Brereton in Geelo Racing, is joining the track as a contract trainer this week.

John Gilburn, Managing Director of the South Yorkshire racecourse, says: “Carl has made a very good impression in the way he has presented his greyhounds and his professionalism and I thought that the set-up that he and owner Nic have established in Lincolnshire is first class. Carl will start immediately and I am sure that he will fit in well at the track.”

Perry, 36, who steered Geelo Vegas to the “Sprinter of the Year” title in 2014, will start with a team of 25, but there is also a burgeoning breeding programme that has been started at the kennels that augur well for the future. He says: “Nic has ten brood bitches at the kennel and we already have around 40 pups, all at different stages of development. Being a contract trainer at Sheffield will enable us to bring them along ourselves and we are looking forward to that.

“It is quite a challenge but one that I am obviously looking forward to. We have a very good team at the kennels and they will play a very important part in what is a major development for us.”

Brereton, who will sponsor the Northern Sprint at the track in July added: “I love Sheffield. It is such a friendly family-orientated place and this move fits in nicely with our future plans.”
