Pam Dolby’s white and black was soon clear from trap six in the last race on Friday and won by just over seven lengths in 34.62 (+40). The run was five spots inside the previous best jointly held by Airport Captain and Adageo Bob.

Leap, who will be four in October, is by Superior Product out of prolific producer Mays Bonus. He was bought unraced from breeder Perry Aylward along with  litter brother.

Pam said: “We have quite a few from Perry. Sometimes they are babies, sometimes we buy them unraced. These were £5,500 for the pair.

“The other dog was always supposed to be faster but he came over with an injury which we could never get on top of and he was eventually re-homed.”

It has been a remarkable study in career growth from the 29 kilo dog who started out in A5 at Henlow, back in May 2017, and has shown steady progress in the ensuing 27 months.

A 23.83 winner over the 400 metre course, he didn’t cut his 575m teeth until last October when winning his first two opens in identical times: 35.65.

By year end, his personal best was 35.16, by February it was 35.03 with his first sub-35.00 less than a month ago.

So was his trainer surprised?

Pam said: “A little bit, but he is hard to catch when he traps in front. He has always been a bit ‘hit and miss’ at the traps but we think the couple of runs at Henlow might have made him concentrate a bit more.

“Ideally, we prefer to see him run out of four, but Romford aren’t keen for him to be seeded middle.”

“We will give him a week off now to keep him fresh for the Champion Stakes.”

**Leap’s victory came just 24 hours after John Mullins’ Swift Biscuit had won for the 17th time in 2019.
