The dogs have settled well at Nick Savva’s. I have my own range away from the others, and a small rented cabin within five minutes of the kennel. Fraser (Black) is here too.
I have a dozen to keep me occupied, the 10 Derby runners and two lame dogs, Sidarian Pearl who has quite a bad Achiles tendon injury and Nitro Notorious who has a slightly inflamed TFL. Obviously it isn’t quite the same as home, how good it be, but it a very comfortable and friendly set-up.
Galloping the dogs is a bit different because Nick’s dogs don’t chase a skin like at home and some have adapted quicker than others. That said, they are all adapting and there are no excuses going into the first round. My own dogs take up most of my day. I stick to the same routine as home, they all go out six times a day, the last turn-out is at 10pm. They all have to be fed, groomed, walked and galloped though I have still found a few minutes to help Nick school some pups.
We have our first three runners on Thursday with Garryvoe Bobby up against Fraser’s Droopys Awesome. I think Bobby has more early pace and I would expect him to go very well, though we only need to qualify. Our other two runners are drawn in the same heat (6) with Clares Rocket drawn in four and Slippery Louise on his outside. I was pleased with Rocket’s trial and the draw should suit him. He is galloping well and seems comfortable in his new kennel. Louise can trap well but she lacks a bit of early and hasn’t really taken to Towcester, she is losing herself a bit on the bends. I think she would go well over 575 yards at Shelbourne.
Onto Friday and we have another two paired together in heat 15. Ballinakil Clare will need a ‘ping’ break to make the most of her chance. She loves the rails and I would expect her to move in on the run to the bend which will suit our other runner Drive On Tipp who is drawn in four. He has really taken to the track and broke the track record from trap four so no complaints about the draw.
Impressive Guy goes in trap two in heat 17. He is a fast dog whose form doesn’t always reflect his ability. He seems to find more than his share of trouble but one night he will get clear and show just how quick he really is.
Onto Saturday and THE heat with the six Irish trained runners of which we have three. Adrahn Zindi is ideally drawn in red. She doesn’t move off the rail and stays on strong though it is a very tough race. I couldn’t have placed my dogs any better than the traps they drew. I particularly like Kiss And Hug in three. He turned right when he came out of trap one. He has a lot of early pace and only just about gets home. Sonic is drawn five and I am hoping he will soon adapt to these traps with the curved starts. His times have been okay – he is a very fast dog – but he hasn’t been trapping as well as I would hope.
Silverhill Conor is our last runner (T1 ht 29). He is really a stayer who has won a couple of 750s and is coming back after an injury. He used to be a middle seen but he likes to come through on the inside. I would expect Jaytee Dutch to lead us up. He runs middle down the straights and rails at the bends so hopefully we can follow him round and get a run at him in the later stages. But it is all about qualifying at this stage.
