MILLWARDS Teddy landed the third major event of his career, and a second over Monmore’s 630 metre trip, in the Ladbrokes Stayers Classic.
The fastest semi final winner went to traps at 11-10f and found himself in third place behind the front running pair Westmead Lola and Five Star Clipper.
Teddy closed up as they crossed the winning line for the first time and he looked all over the winner as they completed the first circuit. He was clear by the fifth bend and eventually pulled away to win by just under six lengths in 37.63.
Winning trainer Dean Childs said: “Once he got his pitch he showed his class and that was the race over. The plan is to run him next on Derby Final night and then do the same as last year; a defence of his Doncaster St. Leger title and then hopefully go one better in the St.Leger itself at Wimbledon.”
So, was there a sense of vindication over Teddy’s lapse of concentration when he failed to pass in the Regency Final.
Childs replied: “These dogs are like any top athletes, they are determined to win and sometimes they get a bit over-boiled. I am still not sure why he had the lapse but he has done nothing wrong since and should everyone what a top quality greyhound he really is.”
Childs completed a double when Home Raider skipped clear in the ‘416 final’ decider. He went three clear off the second bend with Tyrur Vettel in pursuit. Coming off the last bend, Vettel began to close but the leader held on by a length in 24.62.
Ballymac Mossjoe won a thrilling finish to the Ladbrokes Summer Cup Final. Well away, the Barrie Draper trained brindle was outpaced to the first bend by Seamus Cahill’s Southfield Jock as Taranis Bolt was KO’d.
Jock went two clear up the backstraight with Mossjoe on his tail. The pair continued to dominate and the result looked set. But coming off the last bend, Jock’s stride began to shorten and as they raced to the line, Mossjoe edged closer and hit the front in the final strides. The winning distance was a neck and the winning time was 28.23.
Favourite Swift Whirlwind led up in the puppy final but swung wide as Droopys Vodka and Coolavanny Rebel took up the running. Rebel surged clear up the backstraight. He was never going to be caught and held on to win by a length in 28.26.
