Veteran greyhound follower Pat Quinn has praised the GBGB decision to implement a warm weather policy – albeit 43 years later than he had hoped.

Pat, who was head lad to Pam Heasman, remembers his old boss trying to force through change back in 1976 when the kennel’s star Westmead Champ, was one of those affected by the heat.

Pat said: “This is nothing new. 1976 was one of the hottest summers for years and lots of dogs were knocked sideways by it. Pam approached the NGRC and suggested that a temperature limit should be in the rules of racing.

“She met with (Lieutenant-Colonel) Forsdike, Underhill (Chief Exec) and Ken Guy (senior steward) but they weren’t having any of it. It is a shame that it has taken so long for such a common sense idea to be introduced but fair play to Mark Bird and GBGB.”
