1988 A confidential report shows that Leeds Council have been unable to find another greyhound promoter prepared to take over the Elland Road site. The council have continuously blocked the efforts of Ladbrokes to develop the site for warehousing.
2015 Mo’s Bullet goes into the record books for a bizarre reason. The Grand National winner became the first runner with an apostrophe in his name to win a major competition. For many years the use of grammatical symbols was banned by the NGRC and two stud books. The NGRC later changed their rules but nobody bothered to us a ‘. And no, I’m Slippy, was actually, Im Slippy.
1986 Sullane Princess, owned by future trainer John Simpson, and handled by Peter Payne, causes a shock when overturning the Sean Bourke trained 2-5 favourite Fifty Pence in the Oaks Final.
2008 Mildenhall take possession of many of the fixtures and fitting from the recently closed Rye House. They include the traps, hare motor, photo finish and the five year old aluminium kennels from the racing paddock.
1948 Brighton trainer McKay landed the £637 Stamford Bridge Produce Stakes with Kids Shop and then took the £336 Powderhall equivalent with litter brother Keen Scent (Jubilee Time-Kents Sunbeam). A double payday worth approximately £34,000. Kids Shop was originally sold as a pup for 32gns – roughly (£1,270).
1988 Tom Stanley, who led Rayleigh to becoming the first NGRC permit track before taking over the running of Ipswich, dies aged 81. Tom’s daughter Janet Tite is a trainer at Hackney.
1997 TV series Soldier Soldier features a greyhound racing theme filmed at Reading trainer Dave Egan’s schooling track. The plot is that the lead characters acquire a young greyhound who they plan to win a race with at a flapping track but they are delayed on their return from manoeuvres and it is up to the wives to train the runner. They are so successful at preparing her that she wins by too far and they are given the red light.
2015 Droopys Eight is the top lot at Sheffield Sales making 5,800 guineas. He goes on to win one minor open at Harlow and ends his career in A2 at Yarmouth.
1987 Winsor Sail wins a £500 hurdle invitation at Crayford. It was a first career win for Peter Isaac’s runner who is just three months off his fifth birthday.
2012 The Racing Post’s ‘Mutley’ column blasts Nottingham for ‘grading’ the divisions of an Eclipse trialstake into the equivalent of a category one final. The toughest division features Holdem Spy, Hather George, Bridge Honcho and Ballymac Eske who duly sets a new 500m track record.
2015 Nottingham, Sheffield, Kinsley and Swindon are added to the GBGB’s national injury dartabase. Kinsley promoter John Curran said: “Contrary to the popular conception, the racecourse promoters have been sharing the data with the Greyhound Forum for many years, within the terms of a confidentiality agreement. This new system offers two significant improvements. Firstly, the data is available in real-time; it can be assessed as soon as it is filed by the track vets. Potentially, on the same day. This will allow an immediate response to any evolving problem. Under the old scheme it would take many months to compile and analyse the data. Secondly, the new system offers increased integrity since the track vets will be the only ones able to upload the data via a password protocol. That should prevent the critics claiming that information is being supressed by the racecourse promoters.”

1988 Tragedy for Rye House trainer Dave ‘Boy’ Green when an exploding heat lamp burns down his kennel. The deaths include two brood bitches and 16 young pups.
1966 West Ham grader Cardiff Rose had a busy if uneventful four days. During that time she failed by half a length to reach the final of the Test, finished fifth in an open at Southend and was beaten a short head in a graded race at West Ham. Total distance raced 1,950yds. Total prize money collected, £13.

2015 One of racing’s most popular owners Mitch Millward dies following an operation to tackle liver cancer. Millward had hoped to live to see his Millwards Teddy land the St.Leger. Sadly, Teddy broke a hock in the Leger second round just three days later.
