Farloe Quest, who made a great start to his career with trainer Kelly Macari when he won last month’s Pinpoint Recruitment Maiden Derby at Newcastle, carried on the good work on Tyneside on Saturday when he produced the fastest run of the opening round of the Conlon Family Building Company 480.

Starting from the five box in the last of the qualifiers he broke well and dictated the contest throughout, crossing the line two and threequarter lengths clear of Calzaghe Davy in 28.59. The first heat went to the Julie Bateson-trained Glideaway Star, who clocked 28.72 in getting the better of a tight tussle with Calzaghe George by a neck, while Pat Rosney’s Ascot Woodie posted a 28.67 in defeating Brickfield Rio by a length and a half in the second qualifier.

Jimmy Wright, trainer of Brickfield Rio, saw his Airmount Paco set the standard for the Conlon Family Building Cup 640 with a strong finish in heat two that carried him to a threequarters of a length success in 39.22, which was 32 spots faster than the other heat winner Elwick Glory, who outstayed the opposition to beat Fares Please comfortably by three and threequarter lengths.
