GBGB tracks staged 4,667 open races in 2017, a rise of 169 on the previous year and the highest total in five years.

The figures have been consistently around the 4,500 mark in recent times but are some way down from the 2008 levels of 6,209 – when the contributing tracks included Coventry, Hull, Oxford, Reading and Walthamstow.

Interestingly, the average win has risen from £392 in 2016 to £402 last year. It was £319 back in 2008. To be in line with inflation it would now need to be £405.

Romford was again the busiest race venue with 692 opens, followed by 457-Hove, 422-Nottingham, 395-Henlow, 348-Sheffield, 276-Towcester, 238-Monmore.
