Newcastle finished off their Northern Group programme in the Bags Track Championship in style at Doncaster on Wednesday to claim their place in Grand Finals’ day on December 23.
The “Toon Army” went in with all guns blazing and Jimmy Fenwick led the way with a double from Sandyhill Hitman and Some Woman as they took four of the six races, as they accumulated another 50 points, taking their total over the five legs to 227, an advantage of 33 over runners-up Belle Vue.
Newcastle Operations Manager Ian Walton was fulsome in his praise of the team, saying: “I am delighted with the way things have gone and I think assistant racing manager Jason Allwood, who is team captain this year and has worked really hard, and the owners and trainers deserve a lot of praise. They’ve all played their part.
“As for the final, a lot will depend on trap draw and where it is run, but I wouldn’t mind Doncaster! We don’t really know a lot about the strengths of the other groups not having raced against them yet, but I think the fact that we will have a team of ten will help us as we have strength I depth and we’ll have as good a chance as anyone.”
