Droopys Buick’s 28.60 run in the opening round of the RPGTV Scottish Derby was the main headline on Saturday night – though though not the only subject of discussion.
Angela Harrison’s runner shaved three spots off his own Shawfield 480m record, which he set last year.
But, remarkably, the 4-6f only prevailed by half a length from puppy Dorotos Woo Hoo. Even more remarkable was the 28.68 run from Calico Ranger (Holdem Spy-Wont Fall Behind, Aug 15).
Contesting on the fourth race of his career, and with a running style scarily similar to his sire, Carol Weatherall’s black looked every inch a raw pup until he turned on the after burners along the backstraight and beat The Other Reg by four and a half lengths.
