A Sunday double for Heather Dimmock saw the kennel move into fifth place on the Trainers Championship table, just two points off fourth.

The appropriate star of the meeting was Stardom who lifted the Queen Mother Cup after coming off the pace to pip the two Phil Simmonds trained leaders.

It was a victory for quality over suitability with assistant trainer Mick Pacey acknowledging that the Pat Dalton bred fawn had to draw on every ounce of track craft.

He said: “In the first round I think she probably gave away 16 lengths around the first two bends. In the semi finals she probably lost 12 lengths and by the final, it was probably ‘only 10 lengths’.

“She really likes a big galloping track with a long run to the bend. I suppose her ideal trip would be the Nottingham 730.

“We trialled her at Hove for the Regency and she did the fastest time of the year for the 695 metres 41.48 (-30). The bends are a little bit more banked than is ideal for her, but she seemed to run it pretty well.

“She will go there next. Although she picked up a slight spike at Sheffield, it is nothing serious and won’t affect her.”

Stardom was joined on the five winner mark by Volcanic Reef who won impressively in 28.95 for the fastest 500 metre performance of the afternoon.

The pair have amassed 10 of the kennel’s 24 open victories this year – but the Coral Winter Derby favourite is heading in a very different direction for his next engagement.

Mick said: “He is a good greyhound and we will be taking him to Scotland for an attempt at the (RPGTV Scottish) Derby. We are also taking Donation. She was knocked over in her last race but did a pleasing trial at Henlow at the weekend (27.70 – 460m).
