CALZAGHE DAVY, out of action since being knocked out of the Eclipse in the first round in November, is on the comeback trail.
The 2013 All England Cup winner returned to the scene of that triumph on Wednesday where he produced an impressive 17.16 for the 290 metres in a solo spin and a return in the Pinpoint Recruitment Invitation on February 3 is a possibility, although trainer Ted Soppitt was not getting carried away.
“He’s had plenty of problems,” commented Soppitt, “but that is as good as he’s done and it’s a case of touch wood. We have been held up with the weather and he will have a four-bend trial next week, but he is the sort of dog that comes back pretty quick.”
The session also saw a flying performance from the Peter Wood-trained Sneezys Balboa, who posted a 16.98. The November 2012 son of Head Bound and Fireheight Jane defeated a good field in a puppy open at Newcastle last September that included Puppy Derby winner Kneejerkreaction before losing out in the semi-final of that competition
