Ascot Woodie produced possibly the performance of the year at Perry Barr on Friday when landing the top division of the Love the Dogs Standard.

Pat Rosney’s runner asserted early and went on to repel the challenge of a valiant Thirteen Bags to clock an excellent 28.41 (-20).

Racing manager Martin Seal said: “I’d say that it was the performance of the year over the standard trip as clocking a calculated 28.21sec around here takes some doing.

“I believe connections are now mulling over the possibility of a William Hill Derby entry.”

On the same card, there were impressive victories for John Lambe’s well-built Drumcrow John, who made all in the sprint open to clock a decent 16.07sec (-05) and Barrie Draper’s useful Glenpadden Love, who clocked (28.60sec (-20) in the Bitches open.

2014 William Hill classic winner Mileheight Alba won his second successive race after coming back from a long lay-off when beating Coolavanny fish by two and a half lengths in 28.88sec (-20).
