Henlow promoter Kevin Boothby hopes Argentina will become the first of many Puppy Derby winners to grace his track following an impressive run in “an exceptional final” on Sunday afternoon.

Kevin Hutton’s runner went to traps as the kennel’s second string, at least according to the betting, for the Gain Nutrition backed decider. As an event, it was only ever a three runner race with Argentina narrowly leading Newinn Banger into the first bend with the leaders kennelmate Swift Jim (9-4f) on the rails.

Pat Rosney’s Banger continued to challenge into the second bend where the leader appeared to edge across and block his run. It ended his chances. The pair were eventually chased home by brothers King Lennon and King Nelson though neither looked particularly comfortable on the circuit and Nelson now looks set for an attempt at the Springbok.

Following the race, Boothby said: “I was delighted with the overall calibre of the event and I am hopeful that GAIN will be back again next year when I hope we can move the competition a litter bit further forward in the calender.

“We have a big year next year with a string of Cat One races. Subject to GBGB permission, I am hoping our Maiden Derby will be a Cat One event and be held in February.”
