It was a big day for the young ones at Sheffield on Sunday as the track staged a special open meeting to celebrate Father’s Day.
Light Foot Mata has advertised himself as a juvenile with bright prospects with his performances in the Sheffield Stadium Puppy. The October 2013 son of Droopys Scolari and Lightfoot Molly made a promising debut in winning his heat of the event for trainer Elaine Parker and it came as no surprise to see him leading the betting for Sundays final.
He did not make the best break, but he put his early pace to good use to lead through the first corner and he was in complete control after that, running out a four and a half-length winner from Ballydoyle Mary in a decent 28.87 for the 500 metres.
Elaine says: “He is still as green as grass, but he has a lot of pace and I shall be looking through the Calendar for something suitable for him.”
Barrie Draper took advantage of the open card to give Ballymac Sheehy his first outing in the Puppy Sprint and the December 2013 son of Ballymac Vic and Scala Fiona responded with a very impressive win. He had the opposition floundering from the break and ran on strongly to score by three and a half lengths in 16.01 for the 280 metres, a run the augurs well for the future.
The Draper kennel also landed the final of the stayers’ competition with Crazy Weasley, who weaved his way though from the back of the field to deliver a perfect finish that carried him to half-length victory over Dinzeo in 39.09 for the 660 metres.
