~ Marking a change from previous years, this year’s location is part of a move to showcase the sport’s national breadth and appeal ~
GBGB is pleased to announce that this year’s Greyhound of the Year Awards Ceremony – celebrating the best of British greyhound racing from 2022 – will be heading to Sheffield.
Hosted at Owlerton Stadium’s co-located conference suite facilities, The OEC, the 2022 Awards Ceremony will take place on Sunday 12thFebruary 2023.
The move away from London this year was driven by feedback from across the sport and GBGB’s commitment to ensuring another enjoyable but affordable event for those travelling to the Awards, particularly amidst the current cost-of-living pressures.
The stadium backdrop also reflects the sport’s national breadth and appeal. Owlerton was just one of a number of venues considered to host this year’s event across the country.
With racing taking place at Owlerton on both Friday and Saturday nights, the location offers the chance for guests to enjoy a full weekend of sport before the Sunday event. The stadium is working with GBGB to ensure there are a variety of special offers available to attendees across the weekend, the details of which will be published shortly over the coming weeks.
The Awards themselves will once again spotlight the incredible performances and efforts from across the sport – from the canine athletes that have excelled on the track, to the owners, trainers and kennelhands behind their success. After so many thrilling races and record-breaking runs over the course of 2022, the event promises more close competition, not least with the Greyhound of the Year Award.
Mark Moisley, GBGB’s Commercial Director, said:
“We are hugely excited to take the Annual GBGB Greyhound of the Year Awards to Sheffield in February, in a move that I hope will be warmly welcomed across the sport.
“With guests travelling from all over the UK and Ireland for the Awards, this is an ideal opportunity to showcase one of our tracks and keep investment within our sport. Owlerton is an excellent stadium with top-quality facilities and I imagine many will want to take advantage of the racing available ahead of Sunday’s ceremony, ensuring greyhound racing is at the heart of the weekend’s festivities.”
Matt Hamilton, Venue Director for Sheffield Sports Stadium, which incorporates Owlerton Stadium and The OEC, said:
“It is an absolute honour to be hosting the Annual GBGB Greyhound of the Year Awards in Sheffield in February, at the newest addition to Owlerton Stadium – our conference centre, The OEC. To be involved in such a prestigious event inside of British greyhound racing is always fantastic but to be afforded the opportunity to actually host the event is incredible.
“Personally, I think it’s a really progressive move in that GBGB is once again putting back into the sport and the industry by hosting at one of its licensed tracks. The OEC at Owlerton overlooks the racetrack itself so what better place to host the Awards and celebrate the performances of this year’s canine athletes? We look forward to welcoming guests for what we hope will be another brilliant occasion.”
Ticketing information for the Awards will be announced shortly and will see a variety of early bird and group offers available.
A limited number of sponsorship opportunities are also available. For details about how you can get involved, please email Mark Moisley on [email protected].
