After struggling to stage more than seven races on their Saturday fixtures, Wimbledon could stage a dozen this weekend including five opens and an inter-track against Towcester. Ironically, with the stadium’s closure date less than sevens weeks away, crowd numbers are ticking away quite nicely.
Racing manager Gary Matthews said: “We had just short of 1,400 here last week and just short of 1,500 the week before. We know when the closure date is but everybody is doing their best to keep their heads up and remain professional in every way. Thankfully the response from the trainers has been excellent this week. I am sure there will be plenty of interest for the last meeting, or possibly the last two, when we stage the £1,000 opens.
