If ever there was an example of why trap draws matter, it was demonstrated in the final of the Bresmed Northern Sprint at Sheffield on Tuesday. First – rewind a week as the country’s leading sprinter Ela Ela Genie (T3) found himself drawn on the outside of the brilliant Laurels winner Hiya Butt (T2). Genie found his pathway block by Butt and while the latter stormed to win in the second fastest time of the year – two spots slower than Genie’s heat win – Genie failed to qualify for the 280m final by a short head.
Roll forward one week to the £8,000 final and Butt found himself in the white jacket – and who was drawn red? None other than Genie’s little sister, Mashmad Eyebrows who went to traps at 10-1. . .
Eyebrows crossed the line in a respectable 16.09 with the first four home separated by a length and a half.
