Boylesports Irish Derby – 2nd round

We are just two days away from the opening night of the second round at Shelbourne.

There are eight heats on both Friday and Saturday night to enjoy. Barry Caul sat down to speak to the Gone To The Dogs podcast ahead of the weekend so get his thoughts on the racing.

If the opening weekend is anything to go by, we are in for some outstanding action once more. If you have looked at it and are looking to head over for the final night on November 23 then tickets are still available.

Irish Tote continue to promote the reduced Retention Rate for the Irish Greyhound Derby 2024

Tote Manger Anne Prendeville & Denis Hayes (Tote Assistant) launch the details for the reduced retention rate to 12.5% for the upcoming quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals of the Irish Greyhound Derby.

The reduced rate is applicable for win and place bets at Shelbourne Park and is applicable across all betting platforms, including stadium bets, intertrack, and online wagers.

Cornflake into round two for Godfrey

Patrick Godfrey is loving the Irish Greyhound Derby experience but admits his enterprising challenge with Arthur Cornflake in this year’s BoyleSports-backed Classic is more madness than the result of meticulous planning!

“It’s definitely one of the more madder things I’ve done, but I wouldn’t change it for the world!” said Wiltshire-based Godfrey whose June 22 son of Droopys Sydney and Designer qualified behind Kirby Memorial winner Knockeen Dazzler in Saturday’s batch of heats.

Godfrey and Arthur Cornflake go in the penultimate second round heat of the €125,000-to-the-winner event on Saturday and once again the owner-trainer will head over to Dublin on the morning ferry and make an overnight return.

“We’re booked on one of the first ferries back to England on Sunday morning, so it’s very much in and out but makes sense for us,” he added.

Arthur Cornflake, a winner at Monmore and Swindon for Godfrey, was twice successful at Shelbourne during his Irish career when known as Dapper Rupert – before Godfrey purchased him. He is one of two UK challengers left in the event along with March On Freddie.

“I just thought, why not?” he explained. “He’s good enough to compete in that sort of company and hopefully he’s proved it in the first round. You always need luck and we’ll need it on Saturday, but the experience so far has been great.

“Shelbourne have been very welcoming and it’s something I’m delighted I’ve done.”

Wednesday tips from Joe

***6.37 Romford – Teaboy Brownie (3/1)
**7.06 Yarmouth – Loli Pop Jamstyx (5/2)
*9.46 Romford – Elite Albert (9/2)

We head into Wednesday on the back of a winning next best from Tuesday’s selections.

The nap of the evening runs in the first race at Romford at 6.37pm where we see trap five Teaboy Brownie stepping back up in trip following a costly defeat over the 225m distance last Friday. He was 1/2 favourite to win his one off open race last week but didn’t break as well as he can and went on to finish third but moving back up in trip I am hoping he can trap well and lead. He has one way of winning and that is leading early and holding on but he has been given a chance to do so here so away and gone tactics are the plan for Teaboy Brownie in this A1 contest.

The next best for the evening is trap two Loli Pop Jamstyx in the A1 at Yarmouth at 7.06pm. Although she has been running in A1 company as well as a crack at the Oaks, this looks a drop in class in terms of the A1 rivals she has been up against recently so if Loli Pop Jamstyx manages to lead then I would fancy her to hold on. She has runs behind the likes of Laugh Alot, Queen Dusty and Swift Unkind and there wouldn’t be anything of their calibre in this race so hoping for a big performance from Loli Pop Jamstyx.

The value bet for the evening is in the final race at Romford at 9.46pm. Elite Albert lines up in trap one in the S1 over 575m and could go well at a fair price. There is plenty of early pace in the race with Vixons Bagheera, Kingdom Bale and Dreamin Magpie all looking to lead so the race could suit one of the stronger running types and I am hoping Elite Albert can pick off the tired dogs in front of him to score late on.

Brindle to bully the classic?

Sunderland begins the countdown to the Classic with a brace of trial stakes over the big-race 450m trip on Friday.

The Category One competition begins on November 1 and Brindle Bully will be among the entries for the £12,500-to-the-winner event, with trainer David Mullins heading up his team with Friday’s Coral Silver Standard winner.

“He’s already been to Sunderland a couple of times. I actually prepared him and the British-bred pups for this last month as I anticipated a hectic period leading up to the competition, so they’re all good to go on Friday week,” he said.

Brindle Bully scooped the £5,000 Category Two prize at Romford as one of three Mullins-trained runners on the night.

He was cheered on by his team of owners – Harrison Callen, Jack Sofroniou, Russell Barclay, Bradley Barclay, Tommy Clark, Joe Cutmore, Rhys Gennings, Callum Worley and Elliot Schooling.

PGR Oaks Final card features a match race

Saturday night closes out with a match race over the marathon trip.

Hopiehopiehopie and Beach Babe took one another on at Central Park on Sunday night. The latter came out on top on that occasion by four lengths but the former is happy to take her conqueror on again.

Perry Barr’s racing manager Martin Seal spoke to us about the contest. “We had just the two entries. Neither side was keen to drop down in trip to the 660m Stayers race so I was about to scrap it when the idea of a match race popped into my head. A couple of calls later, both sets of connections were on board and with ARC’s Dave Baldwin agreeing, we were off and running.”

You can find the entire Saturday night card on the link.
