East Anglian Derby – 1st Round Tips

*** 7.39 Yarmouth – Millbank Boiler
** 7.56 Yarmouth – Romeo Steel
*7.06 Yarmouth – Gary The Arb

Joe spoke to Patrick Janssens ahead of tonight’s heats.

Heat One

Two of the top three in the ante post betting market go head to head as Lion Heart in trap one lines up against Gary The Arb in trap three. Lion Heart showcased his brilliant early speed when landing the Peter Billingham Memorial Trophy at Monmore on August 24. A 28.07 trial at Yarmouth swinging off the second bend (as plenty do when having their first look at the track) can pave the way for Gary The Arb to take advantage. He can find himself in a winnable position coming out the second bend where the race can completely chance complexion with Lion Heart still finding his way round here. I am with Gary The Arb to take heat one with Lion Heart and Beaming Panther also qualifying.

Heat Two

This looks between the top two in the betting Bombay The Joker and Aero Convey who both have good make ups. Bombay The Joker runs from trap one with Trumpers Bobcat and Droopys Prymtime in traps two and three who he should lead. Yahoo Lolls runs from trap four who will be moving in towards the rail and that leaves Aero Convey with a good draw in trap five. That should ensure that he can safely progress to next week’s semi-final, albeit I think he will be behind Bombay The Joker this evening who can lead and make all. Local runner Murrow Inkosi runs from trap six and can take the third qualifying spot.

Heat Three

The nap of the evening runs in this heat from trap one. Millbank Boiler has taken to the track well although he had to work hard to win a trial stakes last week. He was in trap three and swerved left from the boxes so the perfect make up tonight in trap one can see him lead and make all. The strong running Swift Depot can qualify for next week’s semi-final in behind Millbank Boiler. Greizmann can also qualify from a good draw in trap six.

Heat Four

Antigua Eagle lines up a short price for the race and the ante post market leader. However, I am going to be against him here with Romeo Steel in trap four. He wouldn’t be ideally drawn in four but has found a race where he can lead the inside trio to go round in front if coming away. Another who swung off the second bend in his trial here but clocked an impressive 27.77. If leading, I would fancy him to hold off Antigua Eagle and Ballymac John who can qualify back in second and third.

Heat Five

This sees my main ante post selection running from trap one. Druids Say Go is perfectly drawn here to get her campaign underway with a win. She flew round in a sprint trial clocking 16.33 and followed that up with an impressive four bend trial posting 27.70. This trip with the long straights looks ideal for her. She can lead and make all Getup Me Son and Wrighty also qualifying.

Heat Six

Bramble Linton can get the better of odds on favourite Droopys Doughnut here. Droopys Doughnut’s trial time didn’t match the sectional he clocked. He got to the line in a 5.12 and clocked an overall time of 27.86 so there is a chance here for Bramble Linton to get the better of him. He is drawn well in trap one and has some solid lines of form over two and four bends. They include a 28.43 victory at Monmore and a rapid 16.68 at Newcastle in a trial. The lack of a look is concern but if he can get to the bend in front he can manage himself to go on and beat Droopys Doughnut and Acejukeboxpopper.

Bar One Irish Laurels starts on Saturday at Curraheen Park

It’s 8/1 the field in the ante post market for the €30,000 to the winner competition.

Saturday will be a bumper card at Cork as the 12 races are made up of heats of the Laurels. The ante post favourite is Tribal Syd for Murt Leahy. He was runner-up in the Time International and the winner of the Tipperary Cup in recent months. A recent 28.07 (+20) win over this track and trip suggests he’s raring to go.

Crafty Shivoo is second in the betting, one of the best bitches in the UK during the last 12 months. Prior to that she landed the Irish Oaks. She is in the care of Pat Norris and has to be a leading contender.

The defending champion is the Graham Holland-trained High Trend. He won four of the five rounds in 2023 and was runner-up in the semis, producing a 28.23 best in the second round and a 28.31 in the final.

2023 Irish Derby winner The Other Kobe shaped well in the Bar One Sprint over a trip too short, making the third round. He beat Tribal Syd at Limerick on St Leger final night but was no match for him at Cork last week.

Main Contenders – Best Odds

8/1 Tribal Syd 10/1 Crafty Shivoo 12/1 Ower Cracker, Romeo Taylor, Superfast Gordon, Untold Dollar 14/1 Faypoint Harvey, High Trend, Road Exile 16/1 Ardera Sam, Barefoot On Fire, The Other Kobe 20/1 Droooys Carbine, Evolution, Radical Harry, Romeo Control

Aussie trainer with all eight runners in a race

A race at Warragul on Tuesday saw trainer Mark Delbridge produce the entire field.

Seven of the eight runners would carry the ‘Paw’ prefix but it was Xoel Bale, the sole runner without who would come away with the win over 460m.

It was the final of a competition with Delbridge having eight runners out of the 16 in the heats the previous week. Somehow they all made it through!

Connections will have to name their next dog Paw Commentator in solidarity for him having to deal with seven of them in a single race!

The winner is a 42kg behemoth of a greyhound who you can watch win on the replay below from Greyhound Racing Victoria.

Produce Stakes quarter-finals

Thursday evening will see the final 24 go to the traps.

Four of the top eight in the market carry the Romeo prefix. If you missed Floyd’s Breeding Ground article yesterday talking to David Firmager, it is well worth the read.
