Wednesday tips from Joe

*** 7.39 Yarmouth – Marlfield Sonic
** 7.44 Romford – March On Kit
*9.11 Romford – Swift Ian

A winning nap and runner-up next best on Tuesday takes us into Wednesday looking to go one better.

The nap of the evening runs at Yarmouth in the A1 at 7.39 pm. Trap three Marlfield Sonic has been running consistently well in defeat over four and six bends with four seconds in a row in A1 company staying on strongly.

The race this evening can work in his favour as long as he gets a clear run. There is plenty of early pace in the race where I would expect Rapido Wilson to lead early. He can then be a goalkeeper to others in the race trying to get competitive. If Marlfield Sonic is close enough coming off the last bend, he can power home stronger than anything to pick up a deserved victory.

We head to Romford for the next best and a bitch in fine form at her home track and also on her travels. March On Kit lines up in the S1 over 575m at 7.44 pm off the back of a category three competition victory at Nottingham over 500m.

She runs from trap three and if breaking I can’t see any reason why she doesn’t lead and make all. Corbrack Duchess, Dreamin Magpie and Pacey Robin have been going head to head in recent outings but with the form March On Kit is in at present, it is extremely difficult to look past her. I am expecting her to make it four wins on the bounce.

The value bet for this evening is trap two Swift Ian in the S2 at Romford at 9.11 pm.

He is another who has been running well in defeat over four and six bends recently and looks to have a chance here to dominate proceedings early with a slow stater inside him in Elite Albert and a vacant box on his immediate outside in trap three.

He drops into S2 here for the first time in his career having run well in S1s and also has form behind Romeo Hotshot and Untold Paanga in open race company over C&D so he should be well up to winning an S2 at the Essex track.

Brealey a huge advocate for British breeding

Tony Brealey, owner of Saturday’s BGBF British Bred Oaks winner Coppice Ella, said Kevin Hutton’s feat in sending out all the finalists in the Oxford feature was “no coincidence” given his skill as a trainer – and breeder.

An April 2022 daughter of Droopys Sydney and super-dam Forest Natalee, Coppice Ella led home littermate Southfield Poppy for a family one-two in the Category Two feature at the weekend, with Hutton-bred and/or trained runners filling all five places – Coppice Lottie, also owned by Brealey, was third. In-season non-runner Ivys Showgirl also represents the Burford-based handler.

Brealey said: “It’s no coincidence that Kevin Hutton had all the finalists at Oxford – he’s a quality trainer and canny breeder.

“The interesting part of the result was the fact that the first, second and third were all bred by Kevin. Ella and Poppy, who’s owned by Mark Gilbert and is also a really nice bitch, are from the last Forest Natalee litter, while Lottie is from his brood bitch Not Too Late, this time sired by Derby-winning Dorotas Wildcat – Natalee’s brother!

“I’ve been lucky to have several pups from Natalee’s litters, the most successful to date being Signet Denver who won some really top races for us.

“Ella could easily become a super-brood in the future. She’d already proved capable of progressing through a few rounds of good Cat 1 and Cat 2 competitions, so that’s why I was so pleased she won the BGBF British Bred Oaks. We know she’s from a great family, but could still deliver even more good competition runs on the track, so we’re very excited.

“I’ve got some pups from a couple of exciting litters by Tommy Shelby out of Coppice Mary, another daughter of Forest Natalee. The litter’s Bicester times have been smart. Jeff (Sealey) says anything under 15 seconds is open class – and we have a few.

“Another exciting litter for us is a Signet Denver x Not Too Late batch. I’ve four of these and all look very strong prospects.

“I’d like to say the future is bright for British breeding but lack of financial support for both schooling tracks and breeders may well slow the progress down.

“I’ve put a massive amount of investment into breeding and hope we can have a few top-class pups to encourage more investment.

“Bicester schooling track particularly needs support. It’s a brilliant facility which is so undervalued by the people who make money from our sport.

“Me being involved with breeding and seeing pups develop is exciting but can’t be done without the great people we work with.

“I treat racing like I treat work. Find the right people to work with, treat them fairly, support them, and you will have a long and successful relationship.

“And racing-wise, people asked me before the British Bred Oaks how we’d fare. I thought we had a very good chance of both Lottie and Ella finishing in the first three – and thankfully my faith was rewarded!

“I’ve my fingers crossed that, moving forward, we can do well with some of the great pups coming through.”

Nottingham plans for finals night

As well as a top night of action, Nottingham will also feature 2022 Derby finalist Mickys Barrett at the track.

The story of Mickys Barrett is a well-known one. Named in honour of a Nottingham man who died of cancer, he was owned by a 67-strong syndicate. Trained by Nottingham trainer Jason Gray, he was the story of the 2022 Derby, making it all the way to the final. He would also win the All-England Cup that same year.

Micky is currently enjoying his retirement with a couple of his owners who are kindly taking him to the track to do a meet and greet. It will be a great full-circle moment as the dog heads back to the track where he started his career. Entry is free as part of the National Greyhound Week initiative so a big crowd is expected to pile in on that bank holiday Monday.
