We are very sad to report the death of that great greyhound man, Wanny Fenwick.
Along with his late wife Maerion, the proud Geordie had an association with the breed going back more than six decades.
The pair first gained national recognition as the owners of the brilliant puppy Laurdella Fun, who then sired a string of their own fabulous hounds with the ‘Gan On’ prefix.
A shrewd businessman, Wanny was also a fabulous judge of a greyhound and brought and sold many open race stars, the best known being future English Derby winner Slippy Blue, who was bred by Willie McAllister in Scotland but owned and reared by the Fenwicks at their base in Morpeth before being sold on.
Son Jimmy inherited his parents love of the longtails and breeding which enabled Wanny to retain an interest in the sport throughout his retirement.
“He had a good life” reflected Jimmy last night.
Indeed he did – and he made his mark.
Our thoughts are with the Fenwick family at this sad time.
