Monmore duly landed their home leg of the BAGS/SIS Track Championship on Monday afternoon though the biggest smiles would have been heading south easterly, as Towcester rallied like reigning champs.
Par score for a home leg is reckoned to be 70 points, so the 64 collected by the hosts can only be viewed as a disappointment.
The afternoon kicked off with victory for the ultra reliable Hall Green juvenile Let Me Tell You. The sprint went to local D1 runners Scala Rory. There were also home wins for Stellas Veekayee in the stayers race and Maxitout in the ‘dogs’ event. Moreton Melody produced Swindon’s sole win in the bitches events.
But a double for Mark Wallis with Macs On Storm (standard) and Swift Whirlwind (Elite) plus a couple of seconds and a fourth saw the Towcester handle net 37 of his tracks 40 points and it was ‘game on’.
Instead of bursting into a healthy lead with just the Hall Green leg to go, Monmore find themselves still in second place. Today: 64 Monmore, 40 Towcester, 36 Hall Green, 30 Swindon, 26 Perry Barr.
Running total: 186 Towcester, 180 Monmore, 154 Swindon, 140 Hall Green, 122 Perry Barr
