Droopys Verve (All England Cup) and Droopys Live (Great North Run) were the highlights of a brilliant six-timer for local handler Angela Harrison at Newcastle on Thursday.
The William Hill sponsored All England Cup proved a two dog buckle. Allowdale Bruno was quickest away but Verve produced one of his better breaks and was only a length adrift at the sectional. Connections of the leader would have known their fate at the first bend and a two length leading margin was eaten away along the backstraight.
The English Derby runner-up took an inside line and the lead at the third bend and then extended that to just over four lengths at the winning line for a 28.24 victory – 12 spots slower than his semi final win which was the fastest time of the competition.
Winning trainer Angela Harrison said: “When the five led we thought we would pick him up but he is a good dog as well.” Following the race, the kennel confirmed that Verve will now be heading to the Eclipse with a field that includes Droopys Trapper and Droopys Expert.
Half an hour earlier, another kennelmate Droopys Live had delivered the odds in the Great North Run though she needed to be at her absolute best to take the £3,000 first prize. A length clear after 40 yards, she was seven clear of eventual runner-up Slippy Maggie who had dropped herself out of contention and was in fifth place at the split.
It was Live from Minnies Highway along the backstraight with Slippy Maggie not moving into third place until the fifth bend. She set off after the leaders, attempted to pass Minnies on the outside at the last bend then swerved across to pass on the rail. It is unlikely that a slicker overtake would cost her the race, though it would surely have cut into the winner’s length and three quarter victory.
The Harrison acca was completed by Droopys Nadal (4-5f), Hollylake Fly (dht 7-2), Move Over Ellie (4-6f) and Droopys Trapper (4-7f).
The £500 puppy final was won by Droopys Heron in 28.84. Rated by Jimmy Fenwick as the superior of his two runners, Heron was returned at 5-2 when beating John Mullins’ Sparta Oscar by a length and a quarter.
