Trainer John Mullins was philosophical this morning as he announced that Prestige winner Deanridge Pennys had sustained a broken hock at Hall Green writes Floyd Amphlett.
Drawn three in the £6,000 decider, the veteran black trapped in front and was pursued initially by Farneys Cookie who eventually faded away as Wiki Waki Woo ran on for second place.
The 8-1 chance, who won his first major event, the Joe Dunne Memorial, two years ago this weekend, crossed the winning line in 39.87.
Mullins said: “Its obviously disappointing to see the dog come off lame but its not a bad injury, it looks like a hairline fracture and probably six weeks off. It could have been far worse, he could have smashed it in running and had to be carried off the track.
“There is no blame to be apportioned to the track, these things happen occasionally in greyhound racing. The track actually suited the dog very well, better than Ireland. He likes the slightly smaller circuits. He was picked up at Monmore, but they couldn’t get to him last night.
“I would also like to congratulate Hall Green on their hospitality. We are used to it at the Ladbrokes and Corals tracks, but they put on a lovely meal for us in the restaurant. If they could only pick up the Hall Green restaurant and move it to Wimbledon . . “
