The British Bred Derby Semi finals take place at Sheffield this evening with the first two home from each qualifying through to next week’s £10,000 to the winner final.  A competition which always attracts a high class entry it will take a greyhound from the very top drawer to get their hands on a trophy which for the past two years has been held aloft by connections of ultra talented Fabulous Azurra.

Matt Stagg from the Sheffield Racing Office has kindly offered his insights into the three qualifiers.

Matt said: “The first semi final has two winners from last weeks heats, Queen Joni recorded an impressive 28.82. The second winner was Fearsome Enigma who recorded a winning time of 29.08 with a sectional time of 4.13 which was the quickest of all qualifiers and if he can show that speed again tomorrow he will take some catching.”

Matt said: “The second semi final also has two winners from last Tuesday heats both of Liz McNair’s King dogs. The litter brothers both won at short odds with King Capaldi recording the fastest time of the heats in a calculated time of 28.76, but this week he runs from trap three which isn’t a favourable draw for him. Kevin Ferguson originally had two runners in this heat with Acomb Johnny and Acomb Irene but the latter has been withdrawn in season leaving trap 5 vacant in this semi final.”

Matt said: “The third semi final has last weeks winner Acomb Alfie in who was quick away and always led and recorded a time of 28.93, he draws trap 2 again and has a great chance. Signet Goofy was only 1 ½ length behind King Capaldi last week and with his early pace I can see him leading in this race and may do one better than last week and take first place.”
