There is plenty of interest in the forthcoming ARC Northern Puppy Derby at Newcastle.

Among the outside trainers who have booked trials are Kevin Hutton, Diane Henry, Debbie Calvert, Carol Weatherall, Darren Holightly, Phil Barlow and Maxine Locke.

So far though, the outstanding performer is John Flaherty’s Greenwell Ovett.

Deputy Racing Manager Shauna Nisbet said: “He has never raced but he did a recorded 28.52 in his first four bend trial here. He is only a July ’22 pup and was bred by ex trainer, Neil Black. He sire is Droopys Sydney and his dam is Killieford Kody. He is due to trial again here on Thursday with some of the other likely entries.”

The £12,500-to-winner event for March puppies and young closes on Monday gets underway a week tomorrow – Thursday Fabruary 1.

Among the interesting runners scheduled to contest tomorrow’s trialstakes is Jimmy Fenwick’s 16 month old Coppice Saphire. The half sister of Lively Lauren has 28.89 qualifying form and won on her racing debut last week.

The Ladbrokes Winter Derby gets underway next Saturday (Feb 3) and some of the likely contenders we in action today. Quickest over course and distance were Hove pair Senahel Picachu (28.72) and East Anglian Derby winner, Watch The Limo.
