Racing manager Paul Mellor is more dreading the phone calls AFTER the RPGTV Henlow Derby draw than before it, writes Floyd Amphlett.
The £10,000 to winner event closes on Wednesday and starts next Sunday and Mellor already feels swamped in quality.
He said: “I have never known so much interest in our Derby, not only in the trialstakes but also in dogs trialling. We have been inundated. We had five trialstakes here last night, plus another pile of trials and we are only looking for 36 entries. I will go through all the entries with a fine tooth-comb but I am warning trainers now that there will be some quality dogs who won’t get in.”
Southfield Jock’s entry looks pretty secure following his fastest time of the night on Sunday. The Yarmouth Derby runner-up covered the 460 metres in 27.31, nine spots off Westmead Alexis’ fastest time of the year. Others to have caught the eye included Forest Sara (27.44), Express Master (27.47) and Airfield Paudie (27.62).
The evening’s trial session saw work-outs for: Coolavanny Jap (27.54), Loughteen Pedro (27.56), Coolavanny Slip (27.64), Stay Loose , You Never Listen (both 27.65), Jet Stream Pearl (27.76), Blackrose Zebo, Noirs Allen (both 27.77), Iceman Frank (27.80), Coolavanny List (27.82), Evanta Evita (27.87), Bigmanns Mac (27.98), Aimnfire, Face The Blade (both 28.01).
