TONY MARDLE, an Oaks-winning owner who had greyhounds with both Ernie Gaskin snr and Mick Puzey, died suddenly on Tuesday. He was 72.
Former Walthamstow trainer Puzey said: “It’s really sad news and I’ve just spoken to his wife Ann who is naturally devastated. She has asked if the greyhound fraternity be informed of Tony’s passing.”
Mardle’s Flashy Get won the 1997 Oaks at Wimbledon for the Gaskin camp, but he had earlier had finalists in the bitches’ Classic at Harringay with War Baby and Micks Susie with Puzey.
“Micks Susie was a fantastic bitch and so unlucky in the final, beaten just half a length. Tony had some terrific greyhounds and loved the game at the time.
“He was probably lost to greyhound racing after the Stow closed but we kept in touch. Like me he was a mad keen fisherman and was well known in and around the Hoddesdon area – and in the greyhound world.”
Funeral details will be released at a later date.
(My thanks to Jonathan Hobbs for the above. Tony Mardle was a good guy and proper dog man – Ed)
