Three of the four leading fancies failed to make the Leamaneigh Turbo At Stud British Bred Derby Final at Towcester – but three of Jim Hayton’s four runners did.
The first semi final saw Lowgate Malfoy (T5) and Whatugonnado (T3) start at 5-2 joint favourites but it was Hayton’s Lowgate Malfoy (Windy Millar-Hawks Dutchess, Aug 14) who came out on top with a 30.02 victory over Honest John (T2 3-1). The winning margin was two and two and three quarters. Malfoy’s litter brother Lowgate Lucius (T4 8-1) missed out in third.
Carlos Court (T4) was the 11-10 favourite for the second semi final with Bang On Giles (Kinloch Brae-Tyrur Alice, Apr 14) the 6-4 next in and running from trap one. But it would be Hall Green’s Track Championship star Let Me Tell You (T2 8-1) who would dominate proceedings in the early stages before being outstayed. Phil Simmonds’ winner clocked the fastest of the qualifiers – 29.79 – and the winning margin was a length and a half.
But the biggest shock came in the final qualifier with the elimination of King Kid (T6 4-7f). The contest was dominated by the Elaine Parker bred, Jim Hayton trained Russanda Rubin (Ballymac Vic-Droopys Peaches, Apr 14) who rocketed clear from the black box. The 12-1 shot held off his kennelmate Lowgate Sirius (T3 8-1) by two and a quarter in 29.81.
