It would be hard to know what is rarer – a six-timer or having a dog capable of beating Coolavanny Dylan in an open sprint at Sheffield.
Joy Andrews has both in Sparkyjack who turned over Dylan on Tuesday night. It was only the Bresmed winner’s third defeat in his last 14 races over course and distance.
Jack’s 674-1 sequence includes A3/A2 and D3 wins at Belle Vue and a couple of Sheffield sprint opens.
Although the 37 kilo black took full advantage of Dylan’s first bend collision, his winning time was still a very respectable 16.14 on going rated at -20.
But what made the win particularly sweet for Joy was that three and a half year old son of Leamaneigh Turbo is from her own breeding and rearing.
She said: “I was given the dam Droopys Hilton (Westmead Joe-Droopys Geneva) by Jim Crossley. Jim also gave me Maltese Force, the dam of Flambuoyant, who won a lot of good races at Belle Vue.
“There were four in Jack’s litter and they have all raced at Belle Vue. Thornfield Turbo, on particular, looked to have great potential before injury, and despite it, is still A5.
“To beat Coolavanny Dylan who is top class class sprinter, is a great performance considering Jack is really a 400 metre runner. He is not a pure sprinter but barely gets the 470 at Belle Vue. He has also been prone to cramping, though that seems to have eased off in recent races.”
